Bringing Shampoo on a Plane in Checked Luggage – What you need to know

When traveling abroad, one thing that we all do is panic over whether or not we have brought all of the things that we are going to need. However, with all of the rules and regulations regarding what you can and cannot bring on a plane, it is easy to get confused.

One of the items that most people will want to bring with them is shampoo. However, over the last twenty years or so, the rules regarding what you are allowed to bring with you have tightened significantly. This is why it is a good idea to make sure that you are fully prepared.

Some Points to Keep in Mind When Bringing Shampoo in Checked Luggage

Fortunately, the rules and regulations for bringing shampoo in checked luggage are actually quite basic and easy to follow. The easiest way to remember it is that if you are planning on bringing shampoo in your hand luggage, then it needs to be a bottle of less than 3.4 ounces. Anything larger than that can be packed in your checked luggage without any difficulties.

Tips for Bringing Shampoo in your Checked Luggage

If you haven’t travelled before, then you might find yourself a little worried about packing things like this in your luggage properly. However, there are a few things that you can do to make sure that you have packaged everything securely and that you won’t run into any problems. Here are a couple of tips.

  • Hand Luggage – If you are going to be bringing a shampoo bottle in your hand luggage, then there are a few things that you will need to do. First of all, make sure that it doesn’t exceed the volume limit. If it is larger than 3.4 ounces then you are going to need to put it in your checked luggage. Anything smaller can be carried in hand luggage, but you will need to make sure that it is in a clear sealable bag. If you have trouble finding small bottles of shampoo then go to your local pharmacy or supermarket where travel bottles can easily be found.
  • Packing Shampoo – One thing that you may have found yourself worried about, if you are planning on bringing shampoo in your checked luggage, is the possibility of there being a leak. There are a few things that you can do to lower the chances of this happening. Firstly, make sure that you haven’t packed everything in too tightly. It is also a good idea to make sure that it isn’t too loose either because if the bottle is rolling around then the chances of it leaking are much higher.
  • Buy a Wash Bag – If you want to make sure that the bottle doesn’t explode, then it is a good idea to make sure that you buy a wash bag to place your toiletries in. Many of these wash bags actually have separate compartments for bottles of shampoo and things, so by placing them in these you will lower the chances of the bottles leaking.
  • Consider Buying When you arrive – If you are really worried that your shampoo bottles will explode and ruin all of your clothes in your suitcase, then it might be a good idea to consider buying travel shampoo once you arrive at your destination. Most supermarkets abroad will carry essential items like these for tourists who have forgotten to pack them, so you could consider doing this rather than risking an explosion of shampoo in your suitcase.
  • Wrap the Bottles – One final thing that you can do, if you want to minimise the risk of any bottles of shampoo or conditioner leaking is to wrap them individually before you pack them in your luggage. You could wrap them in bubble wrap or something similar, or perhaps even use an item of clothing like a t-shirt to wrap them and protect them from knocking against anything during the flight.

As long as you make sure that you have followed all of the rules and regulations regarding bringing shampoo onto a flight in your checked luggage, then you should not run into any problems when boarding your flight. As mentioned above, the rules for shampoo are actually very basic, in comparison with things like alcohol and tobacco.

By following the safety precautions mentioned above, you can make sure that you do not run the risk of any of your shampoo bottles leaking or exploding whilst you are traveling. The chances of this happening are pretty low as it is, but the last thing that you want is to arrive at your holiday destination, exhausted, to find all of the clothes in your suitcase covered in shampoo or conditioner.
